De bodem onder het nieuwe damlichaam bleek
hier en daar slapper dan was verwacht,
hetgeen extra werk meebracht en extra zand
vereiste. Op hogere delen van het talud werden
betonblokken rechtstreeks op klei gezet,
overeenkomstig een kostenbesparend plan van
de aannemer. In het algemeen heeft deze
werkwijze voldaan, al spoelde kwalitatief
mindere klei wel eens uit.
De bruggen over het Bathse Spuikanaal
Het Bathse Spuikanaal, dat dienen moet als
afwateringskanaal voor het toekomstige
Zoommeer, kruist een groot aantal leidingen
en wegen, en ook nog de spoorweg naar
Vlissingen. Besloten is al deze kruisingen uit te
voeren als bruggen. De overspanningen
konden voor sommige verbindingen worden
verkleind door het kanaal plaatselijk te vernau
wen. Uit esthetische overwegingen krijgen
dicht bij elkaar gelegen bruggen zoveel
mogelijk een gelijk aanzien. Uit verkeerstech
nisch oogpunt is het nodig de dwarsprofielen
van de wegen in één lijn te brengen met de
overeenkomstige overbruggingen van de
Schelde/Rijn-verbinding. De constructie van de
bruggen en de voorgenomen wijze van
uitvoering worden besproken.
Mattresses made to measure, an insurance
premium
If it appears that the top foundation mattresses
in the Oosterschelde are not level, this can be
corrected with the aid of two strips of mattresses
fashioned with small concrete blocks, which
have been made as negative impressions of
the carefully-measured uneven sections. This
provision, excluding materials, costs seventeer
and a half million guilders, and must be
regarded as an insurance premium. The blocks
are fixed to the mattress with cables. In
addition to straight blocks there are also
slanting blocks, which facilitate the running of
the 'Macoma's vacuum-cleaning head.
Positioning instruments indicate where the 10C
tons headbeam must be placed exactly on the
sea-bed; subsequently the strips are lowered
from the drum and rolled out. Existing equip
ment has been modified for this work; not onl>
the vessel that places the mattresses, but also
the drum on which the strips are rolled and the
factory in which the strips are made.
The Executive Centre Storm-surge Barrier
As the Oosterschelde-project progresses, the
coordination of the works becomes more and
more complicated and important. The Executive
Office on the workisland 'Neeltje Jans' serves
many purposes. The information centre
provides the Hydro-Meteo data regarding the
prospects of working in the area and data on
the ongoing activities are also gathered here.
The Centre also coordinates the anchoring in
the closure gaps and the shipping traffic to anc
from the work-harbours. Finally, italso function
as a nerve centre for the measuring and
sounding services and directs underwater
inspections.
Research into construction-phases with the air
of mathematical models
To obtain exact information on current-pattern
in all tidal conditions during the consequents
construction-phases, large scale
two-dimensional mathematical models are
being used. The boundary conditions for these
models cannot easily be derived from such
models as the 'Randdelta II' and the 'Scheldes'
