neel vooral uit Noord-Brabant moeten worden
aangevoerd.
laten. Ook bij het ontwerp van het hulpmaterieel
zijn vorderingen gemaakt.
The probabilistic approach to construction
designs
Important changes are taking place in the
design philosophy of sea defense. The
deterministic method applied up till now
implied the design of a sea defense based on
one single storm-surge level with an
accompanying wave runup. The new
probabilistic method uses a statistical
distribution of chances of water levels and wa\ e
runups, whereas the construction itself should
also be based on the distribution of chances a;
far as the strenght of the materials is concerne I.
The new method will be used as much as
possible with the design of the storm-surge
barrier in the Oosterschelde.
Developments in the philosophy about dikes
It was the Delta Committee that ultimately
unified the guide-lines which form the bases f r
sea defenses for the whole country. These
guide-lines mainly determine the height of the
crest of the sea defenses. This still leaves a
great latitude in the choice of the dike profile.
However, the chances of collapse of a dike als
depend on the wave runup and on the
collapse-mechanism of the dike. As yet little is
known a bout these two factors. A first step in
the study about these factors should consist of
examining the part that wave-overtopping pla1 s
in the collapse of a dike.
Raising of the dikes in Zuid-Holland
Since 1975 every raising of a dike in the
province of Zuid-Holland has been discussed i
