This town, famed far and wide throughout Britain, set on steep slopes ringed round with crags, is marvellously made. Through many weirs a strong stream flows, and there thrive countless kinds of fishes in its whirling waters. There too has grown a great forest-fortress, where wild beasts dwell without number in deep dark dells, animals of all sorts. In this town, as even children know, lie the body of the blessed Cuthbert, and the head of the holy king Oswald, lion of this land; bishop Aidan also, and Eadberch and Eadfrith, both noble barons. There with them is bishop Aethelwold, the saintly scholar Bede, and Boisil, the abbot who gladly guided Cuthbert in his youth (and the lad learned those lessons well). And in the minster, arrayed around the saint, are countless relics; many miracles happen here, recounted in its records, while God's good servant waits for Judgment.
